SETTING UP USER GRID

*** This works fine where we are - close to and north of the equator - but doesn't work elsewhere ***

Earlier we showed you how to change to USER GRID, but we didn't explain how we calculated the numbers we used. You need to know, because the values we gave are only correct for a small area. When you work in another area, you need to find the right values for that area. Fortunately, the GPS will do almost all the calculations for you.

Select a point on the map near the area where you will be working; one corner of the map is usually good. We'll take the lower right corner of the Kuap sheet as the example, as this is near the area we used for the field exercise at Taee.

Note down from the map BOTH the lat/long and the map grid coordinates (in blue) of the point selected. In this example the point is at

LAT/LON 1º 15' N, 110º 30' E
MAP GRID Easting 39-55-500
          Northing 10-37-825

Create a landmark with the LAT/LONG data and call it 'REF' (see "Entering a position with LAT-LONG data")

Now we'll set up a user grid with 'false' coordinates of zero

On the MAIN MENU, select SETUP MENU, press ENTER, then select NAVIGATION, press enter

Highlight the current position format (eg hdddºmm.mmm') and press enter.

Press the up-down arrows until User Grid appears, press ENTER

Set up the user grid with the following numbers:

  • Longitude of origin needs to be just west of the area you are working in; for Forest School 110º is fine.
  • Scale: 1 exactly
  • False E and False N: zero (termporarily)
When done, highlight SAVE? and press ENTER

Now go back to the REF waypoint, and look at the coordinates in the user grid format - note that Easting is above the Northing - they are not the same as the values you noted from the map.

SUBTRACT the values on the machine from the values from the map, for both easting and northing; this tells us what the 'false' easting and northing should be:
             Easting Northing
From map: 39-55-500 10-37-825
From GPS: 00-55-640 01-38-212
Subtracting 38-99-860 08-99-613
these will go in as 'false' Easting and Northing

Go back to the NAV SETUP menu and highlight the User grid position format; press enter.

  • Change the False E to 03899860.0
  • Change the False N to 00899613.0
When done, highlight SAVE? and press ENTER

  • Now go back to the REF waypoint once again. This time the USER GRID coordinates SHOULD be the same as the values you noted from the map..
